Freedom and opportunities as a consultant at Head Energy
Mats Larsson startedas a consultant at Head Energy in 2019 and has since participated in severalexciting projects for various clients. Today, he works as a senior structuralengineer at RDS Engineering and looks back on five years with an employer thatoffers diversity, trust, and opportunities for growth.
- Mats is a skilled engineer and ishighly valued by colleagues and partners. He quickly understands clients’ needs, adapts to projects, and consistently takes the initiative to gain new knowledge, says Sigurd Danielsen, Business Developer at Head Energy Consulting Bergen.
Originally from Sweden, Mats began his career as a welder before spending seven years as a dairy farmer. After his time as a farmer, he pursued further education as a mechanical engineer, gaining experience in large-scale construction and oil & gas projects in both Sweden and Norway. After several years as a structural engineer in Norway, he moved back to Gothenburg in 2016.
Three years later, in 2019, he received a message from Sigurd asking if he was interested in returning to Norway.
- I missed Norwegian projects, so when Sigurd contacted me to see if I wanted to move back, the decision was easy, Mats explains.
Professional growth through exciting projects
As a consultant at Head Energy, Mats has worked for both Apply and RDS Engineering. He describes consulting life as varied and educational, offering numerous exciting projects that provide room for both professional and personal development.
One standout project required a high degree of technical precision and interdisciplinary collaboration:
- Installing the flare gas compressor on Gullfaks B as a consultant for Apply was particularly exciting. The project required advanced planning for skidding, which involves precisely moving heavy equipment in tight spaces. It was an extensive and technically challenging structural project where I learned a tremendous amount, he shares.
In his current role at RDS Engineering, Mats has also expanded his expertise into new areas, such as piping.
- The freedom to develop and explore new areas is what makes consulting so rewarding. You have a unique opportunity to build broad expertise through exciting projects, which ensures I never feel stagnant, Mats says.
Part of the social environment
Mats describes consulting life as flexible and enriching but also emphasizes the social environment he experiences with his clients.
- Even though I’m a consultant, I’m fully integrated into the work environment at the places I work. I’m always invited to Christmas parties and other social events. You really feel like a permanent employee, he says.
He also highlights the sense of trust that comes with the consultant role:
- As a consultant, you’re brought in to solve problems. That gives a sense of both responsibility and belonging.
Head Energy – an employer that supports
Mats points to Head Energy as an employer that provides security, flexibility, and strong support.
- Head Energy sets me up for success. Being a consultant gives me the freedom to explore different projects and industries. If I want new challenges, I can always reach out to Head Energy. I feel much more secure with them backing me, he concludes.
