Stavanger Cathedral

Commissioned by Stavanger Municipality, Head Energy PA has led and coordinated the restoration of Norway's oldest cathedral.  

Our scope: Project management, construction management and HSE

Stavanger Cathedral was completed around 1125 and is the only cathedral in Norway that has been in continuous use since the Middle Ages. The cathedral is automatically protected as a heritage monument.  

The restoration is based on a restoration plan prepared in 2013 by the architectural firm Schjelderup & Gram. To allow for extensive works, the cathedral closed its doors in May 2020, and the restoration was completed in 2025.

Bengt Frantzen, Managing Director of Head Energy PA, has been the chief construction manager for the project from the start. Håvard Bjelland has served as assistant construction manager, while Kjell Magne Ommedal has been responsible for HSE during the closure period. Britta Goldberg has been project manager throughout the restoration.

– This is a project that makes entirely different demands than ordinary construction projects. When you work on a building that has stood for almost 900 years, it takes thorough planning, a high level of professional precision and deep respect for both its history and its future use, says Frantzen.

As project and construction manager, Head Energy PA has been responsible for leading and coordinating complex processes, following up quality, progress and costs, and ensuring that the work has been carried out in line with strict heritage and technical requirements.
